Lunar the Silver Star (Sega CD)

Feature

Magazine Text:

Big-time adventure role-play is finally coming to the Sega CD. Working Design’ first Sega CD title, Lunar contains over 4 megabytes of text alone. The game is huge, spanning continents and space in an adventure to become a Dragonmaster. The game has animated graphics, digital voice recordings and grand, sweeping music. Lunar: The Silver Star loads quickly and has an AI feature that makes combat a breeze.

Commentary:

The Sega CD came out in Q4 1992 and the desire for a great Role Playing Game hadn’t been satisfied one year after the release. Sega Visions dedicated 8 pages to highlight 45 games that were released or shortly coming out (the issue is titled December/January 1994 but it likely came out in November before Lunar was released). Each game contains two screenshots and a little blurb.

I find it interesting that in the world of small cartridge sizes, the existence of 4 megabytes of text was a big deal but it truly would have been impressive. Other than a fun bug that can make fights easier, you rarely see anyone mention the AI feature of the game so that is fun to see. I guess it would have been novel and would stick out for the editors of Sega Visions.
