The Retro Gaming Project

05 October 2024

Being on the Internet in the days after Digg and Reddit hasn’t been that much fun. When I was younger I’d make things on things that interested me. Putting something out there sparked a creative itch that could take those pursuits into all sorts of directions. Before the news of the LUNAR Remastered Collection, I was playing through Lunar the Silver Star on an emulator on my computer. It’s something I do a lot and I realized that at one point I had downloaded every Sega CD game. Most I had never played. I thought about a project to play through the games or collect information, and so I did what I always do, I registered a domain name: retrogamingproject.net. I’m happy that today I announce that the project now has its humble beginnings right here on my site!

The domain redirects to my Projects page. The scope of the project may change over time, but today I’m treating it as a repository of information (magazine coverage, video, notes, and other things I find compelling) on video games that have been influential to me.

The Retro Gaming Project will contain one page per game with links to other pages with the tidbits. Today, I’ve created the first page for my favorite game of all time: Lunar the Silver Star for the Sega CD. I had been going through old Electronic Gaming Monthly magazines1. When I stubmled upon the first reference to Lunar, I got the idea that it’d be fun to find and index references to these games in the game journalism of the time. The Lunar page lauches with 4 separate entries from EGM: a preview from September 1993, an advertisement from December 1993, the official EGM review from December 1993, and a feature with more details, also from December 1993. Each page contains a screenshot of the page, the transcribed text, and my commentary. My hope is that after I collect all the information, I’ll do a write up on the page and then move onto another game.

Likely, I’ll be working through the project by month so keep an eye out on the Reto Gaming Project Index as each new page will be added here. Each month in the recap I’ll document the progress so if you’re only following the posts, you’ll have a path to be informed.
